MoBILE APP CASE STUDY

Bakery Delivery is an app that connects customers with local bakeries, making it effortless to order and receive fresh baked goods. Whether for busy workers or those with mobility challenges, the app offers a seamless experience, allowing users to browse menus, customize orders, schedule deliveries, and make secure payments. With convenience at its core, Bakery Delivery brings the joy of freshly baked goods directly to customers' doors.

RESPONSIBILITIES↓

Conducting interviews, paper and digital wireframing, low and high-fidelity prototyping, conducting usability studies, accounting for accessibility, and iterating on designs.

The Problem

  • Busy workers face challenges when it comes to preparing fresh baked goods for occasions like when friends come over or kids' birthday parties.

  • Disabled or elderly individuals find it difficult to physically go to a bakery and struggle with using an app.

[ ]

The goal

  • The goal is to design a user-friendly Bakery Delivery app that enables users to effortlessly book orders and have fresh baked goods delivered. The app should prioritize accessibility and ease of use for users.

My role

  • As the UX designer for the Bakery Delivery app, I was responsible for designing the app from conception to delivery. My role included conducting interviews, creating wireframes, developing low and high-fidelity prototypes, conducting usability studies, considering accessibility, and iterating on designs.

Moderated Usability Study

Through interviews(Moderated Usability Study, conducted remotely with a UX designer supervising) and empathy maps, I gained insights into the users' needs I'm designing for. One key user group identified was busy working adults who lack time to bake at home. However, the research revealed that time was not the only constraint for users. Other challenges included booking a delivery date and time, accessing fresh baked goods, or visiting bakeries in person.

Time

Working adults face challenges in finding the time to visit bakeries and purchase fresh baked goods when needed, due to their busy schedules.

⊙ Age: 35
⊙ Occupation: Marketer
⊙ Family: Living with her husband

Goal

  • To deliver baked goods from a local bakery

  • To use a smartphone app easily

Pain points

Existing food ordering platforms lack proper support for assistive technologies, making it difficult for individuals with disabilities to access and use the services effectively.

Accessibility

“I want a bunch of fresh bread when I need it.”

Frustrations

  • Lack of bread options when visiting the bakery last minute due to a busy schedule

  • Feeling unsure about the freshness of delivered bread

Bio

  • Jisoo is a busy marketer, enjoys hosting gatherings at her place, and often orders various bread or desserts for these occasions. However, she frequently encounters situations where the bakery does not have enough options available, leading her to settle for leftover choices.

Persona

Goal

  • To reserve a specific date for ordering bread or dessert when hosting gatherings

  • To enjoy freshly baked goods

30-60 minutes

“Going to the bakery in person is tiring,
but ordering through an app is often challenging.”

Frustrations

  • Going to a bakery in person is not easy

  • Having trouble to use an app

Bio

  • Jin used to work at a battery company before retiring. Unfortunately, he faced a life-altering car accident that broke his neck. Despite this, he still retains the ability to walk, although it can be quite exhausting. Now that he's retired, Jin enjoys writing novels at home. He finds inspiration for his stories while enjoying little muffins and a cup of coffee.

Usability study: findings

I conducted two rounds of usability studies. Findings from the first study helped guide the designs from wireframes to mockups.
The second study used a high-fidelity prototype and revealed what aspects of the mockups needed refining.

Round 1 findings

Users want an intuitive way to confirm the schedule.

Round 2 findings

Users want to change their information in Checkout page.

Users want larger font sizes.

Low-fidelity prototype

The low-fidelity prototype connected the main user flow of scheduling and ordering bakery goods, enabling usability studies with users.

Users want to customize their orders.

Users want a calendar with improved indicators for available dates and months.

Users want a clear indicator to add to Cart.

Key Mockups

[ ]

Based on the usability studies, I improved the app's user experience by refining the calendar feature. Also, I added a user-friendly customization page, providing options for fresh goods and sauces, complemented by an intuitive 'Add to Cart' button.

After usability study

After usability study

Based on the second usability study, I made the following improvements:

  • Inserted a clear date and time confirmation sign for users during the scheduling process.

  • Added an 'edit' button on the checkout page, allowing users to change their schedule or other information during the checkout process.

  • Included a font zoom-in feature to improve readability and accommodate user preferences.

Takeaways

Through this UX design project, I learned the importance of research and gained unexpected insights that challenged my assumptions. It humbled me and emphasized the need to consider diverse perspectives. I also deepened my understanding of accessibility and realized there is more to learn about designing for different user needs. Furthermore, I realized the necessity of creating a separate app for bakery owners to effectively manage orders and schedules, ensuring the success of the overall system.
